Helping You Pursue Every Benefit You Deserve

Expert Guidance for Social Security Disability & SSI Claims

At Legacy Disability Advocates, we help people pursue Social Security Disability benefits. We focus on the federal programs designed to provide financial support when you are unable to work because of a qualifying disability. We guide clients through every step of the process, from the initial application through appeal and hearing representation.

We represent clients for both Social Security Disability Insurance benefits and Supplemental Security Income benefits. Both programs are administered by the Social Security Administration, but they serve different purposes and have different requirements. Understanding the differences can help you pursue every benefit you may qualify for.

Social Security Disability (SSDI) Benefits

Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSDI, is a federal disability program that provides monthly benefits to people with disabling medical conditions who have earned sufficient work credits by paying Social Security taxes during their careers. You must meet a strict definition of disability and have worked enough to qualify for SSDI. SSDI is not based on financial need. You may also qualify for Medicare after a period of receiving SSDI.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Benefits

Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, is a needs based benefit program for disabled adults and children with very limited income and resources. SSI may be available to people who have never worked or who do not have enough work credits to qualify for SSDI. SSI may also be available to people who are older or blind and meet the eligibility criteria. SSI is funded differently from SSDI and may provide a baseline level of income support.

Key Differences Between SSDI and SSI

SSDI and SSI share the same definition of disability, but they differ in how eligibility is determined and how benefits work.

When You May Be Eligible for Both Programs

In some situations, you may qualify for both SSDI and SSI if your work history qualifies you for SSDI and your income and resources qualify you for SSI. Receiving both types of benefits can provide additional monthly support, depending on your financial situation and work history.

SSDI is based on your work history and the amount you have paid into Social Security.

SSI is based on income and asset limits. SSI looks at your financial situation as a central part of determining eligibility.

In both programs, you must meet the Social Security Administration definition of disability.

Medicare coverage begins for most people after a period on SSDI. SSI recipients may qualify for Medicaid or state health programs, depending on where they live. In California, SSI recipients may also receive the state supplemental payment.

How We Help

Initial Social Security Disability Claims

We help you prepare and submit your application for Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income. We make sure your application is complete, accurate, and supported by the appropriate medical records. We help you gather your evidence, organize it, and present it in a way that tells your story clearly.

Reconsideration and Appeal Preparation

If your claim is denied, we help you file for reconsideration and build a stronger case for your appeal. We review your file to identify what is missing, and we work to fill those gaps with the evidence needed for success. We know that many claims are denied initially, and we are ready to fight for you.

Hearings Before an Administrative Law Judge

We represent you in hearings before an Administrative Law Judge. We prepare you for your hearing, and we present your case in a way that clearly explains how your condition affects your ability to work. We understand what decision makers need to see.

Supplemental Security Income Benefits

If you qualify for Supplemental Security Income, we help you pursue those benefits with the same care and focus we give to SSDI claims. We explain your options, organize your evidence, and pursue your benefits with a complete and effective strategy.
